The Culture of Sickness
I watched an ad on television today. It was for another medicine for Crohn’s Disease. It was selling me an illness I already had. It told me how bad it was and showed me pictures of people in pain, making funny faces. Good thing they are making these new wonder drugs to mask the pain of Crohn’s.
As I sat watching the ad I noticed that the side effects of the medicine were worse than my illness ever was. Is that how you cure an illness, creating pills that give you healthy intestines but at the price of every other organ in your body?
Is that a true cure or a symptom of our culture, to cover and hide our illness?
